ORIENTAL ORCHIDS

Oriental Orchids is one of those paintings that could only have come after many years at the easel. It owes something to the great French still life painters and to the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, artists who understood that ordinary objects, beautifully arranged and illuminated, could become something timeless.

I have always believed that painters inherit a vast visual language from those who came before us. We study it, absorb it, and eventually make it our own. In this painting, that inheritance appears in the rich darkness, the restrained color, the elegant vessels, and the carefully orchestrated light—but the composition itself is very much my own.

The eye enters quietly at the left, where pale lilies emerge from shadow, then travels through the warm glint of a small brass Chinese pitcher before arriving at the luxuriant purple orchids. They are the heart of the painting: exotic, graceful, and almost theatrical against the subdued browns, grays, and deep surrounding shadows.

I deliberately reserved the richest blues and purples for this focal area, allowing the orchids to possess a jewel-like intensity. Around them, the vessels remain quieter and more mysterious. Some emerge fully into the light; others nearly disappear into darkness. The effect is intimate and romantic, suggesting objects collected over a lifetime and brought together for a brief moment of extraordinary beauty.

Even the sweeping shape of the orchid blossoms was carefully considered. Their curving silhouette seems almost to embrace the center of the composition, while the slender supporting stakes provide just enough structure to hold all that movement in balance. The painting leads the eye through a succession of curves, reflections, textures, and shadows without ever allowing it to escape.

For me, Oriental Orchids is not simply a painting of flowers. It is about elegance, restraint, sensual color, and the quiet drama created when beautiful objects encounter beautiful light. There is a richness to the painted surface and a depth to the darker passages that photographs can only partly convey.

It is the kind of painting I hope reveals itself slowly. From across a room, the orchids command attention; up close, the subtleties of paint, porcelain, brass, petals, and shadow begin to emerge. My hope is that it becomes not merely something to look at, but something a collector continues to discover—and to enjoy living with for many years.
